Out of the 602 handicraft fields recognized worldwide, 299 are found in Iran. Almost two-thirds of the country's handicraft fields (i.e. 196 fields) are active in Isfahan. About 68,000 artists are working in various handicraft fields in this province. In 2014, Isfahan became the first Iranian city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in crafts and folk art. In 2015, it was registered as the first Iranian city on the World Craft City list.
