Si-o-Se Pol

Saturday, 04 January 2025

Si-o-Se-Pol is one of the masterpieces that remained from Shah Abbas I's reign. It was constructed at the expense and under the supervision of Shah Abbas's great commander, Allahverdi Khan. That is why it is also called the "Allahverdi Khan Bridge."

The bridge has also been named "Bridge of Thirty-Three Arches" and "Si-o-Se Pol," alluding to the thirty-three arches or chambers on this bridge.

Si-o-Se Pol, as part of the long Chaharbagh Avenue, is approximately 300 meters long and 14 meters wide. This makes it the longest bridge over the Zayandehrud.

During the Safavid era, the ancient Iranian ceremonies known as "Aabrizan" or "Aabpashan" were held near this bridge. Such events have been interestingly reported by European travelers of the time in their travelogues.
