Chaharbagh Avenue, one of the most important recreation sites in Isfahan, was built during the reign of Shah Abbas I and has been one of the most beautiful streets in the world ever since. Chaharbagh was once surrounded by royal gardens, but today those gardens have been replaced by shops and commercial complexes.
Chaharbagh is divided into three parts: "Chaharbagh-e Paeen", "Chaharbagh-e Abbasi", and "Chaharbagh-e Bala". Chaharbagh-e Paeen extends from Shohada Square to Dowlat Gate (Imam Hossein Square), Chaharbagh-e Abbasi stretches from Dowlat Gate to Si-o-Se Pol, and Chaharbagh-e Bala runs from Si-o-Se Pol to Shiraz Gate (Azadi Square).
The approximate date for the construction of Chaharbagh-e Abbasi and Chaharbagh-e Bala is 1591 (1000 Hijri) during the reign of Shah Abbas I. However, the extension of Chaharbagh towards the north (Chaharbagh-e Paeen) happened fifty years ago. In its construction, Chaharbagh-e Abbasi's design was followed.
In recent years, the significant part of Chaharbagh (Chaharbagh Abbasi) has been transformed into a pedestrian walkway, strengthening the tourism aspect of this historical passage.
