The cities of Isfahan and Florence signed a sister-city (twinning) agreement on September 14, 1998 (14.06.1377 in the Iranian calendar).

The craft known today as maiolica (Italian maiolica) became widespread in Italy during the Middle Ages and reached its peak especially in the Renaissance period (15th and 16th centuries).

These ceramics were typically made from clay, then coated with a white glaze (based on tin oxide), and afterward painted with bright colors. This white glaze provided an ideal surface for colorful decoration.

The major centers of production for this type of ceramic in Italy included cities such as Faenza — from which the term faïence in other languages is derived — as well as regions around Florence.

These ceramics were not only used in daily life but were also valued as artistic and ceremonial objects. During the Renaissance, historical, mythological, botanical, and animal motifs were engraved or painted on them.

Today, the production of these ceramic arts continues and remains an important part of Italy’s artistic heritage.

شهر اصفهان و شهر فلورانس در تاریخ ۱۴ سپتامبر ۱۹۹۸ میلادی (۱۴٫۰۶٫۱۳۷۷ خورشیدی) قرارداد خواهرشهری به امضا رساندند.

صنعتی که امروز تحت عنوان «مایولیکا» (italian maiolica) شناخته می‌شود، از قرون وسطی در ایتالیا رواج یافت و به‌ویژه در دوره رنسانس (قرن ۱۵ و ۱۶ میلادی) به شکوفایی رسید.

این نوع سرامیک‌ها معمولاً از خاک رس، سپس با لعابی سفید (از قِبَل اکسید قلع) پوشانده می‌شدند و سپس با رنگ‌های روشن نقاشی می‌شدند؛ این لعاب سفید بستر مناسبی بود برای تزئینات رنگی.

مراکز مهم تولید این نوع سرامیک در ایتالیا شامل شهرهایی مثل فاِنتسا (Faenza) که اصطلاح «faïence» در زبان‌های دیگر از نام آن گرفته شده – و همچنین منطقه اطراف فلورانس بودند.

این سرامیک‌ها نه‌تنها کاربردهایی روزمره داشتند، بلکه به‌عنوان اشیای هنری و تشریفاتی نیز ارزشمند بودند؛ در دوره رنسانس، نقوش تاریخی، اساطیری، گیاهی و حیوانی بر روی آن‌ها حک می‌شد.

امروزه هم تولید این نوع هنرهای سرامیکی همچنان ادامه دارد و بخش مهمی از میراث هنری ایتالیا را تشکیل می‌دهد.
