In Syria, especially in historic cities such as Damascus, the use of cultural symbols—such as medals, commemorative plaques, and architectural emblems displayed throughout the city—has a long tradition in honoring diplomatic or cultural occasions.

Diplomatic and municipal figures in Syria have often used such symbols in international relations to express friendship, cultural cooperation, and inter-city connections.

Plaques depicting historic buildings or ancient city gates (for example, a “Bab …” gate or the structure of Bab al-Salam) represent the city’s cultural heritage and are selected to symbolize the cultural bond between two cities.

For instance, Damascus contains numerous gates, façades, and historic structures that serve as symbols of the city; choosing one of them (such as Bab al-Salam, if present) as the image for a plaque can convey a message of peace, well-being, and urban connection.

Moreover, presenting such a gift by the Syrian ambassador or a diplomatic representative to a city in Iran can be part of cultural and municipal diplomacy—a commemorative urban plaque offered to emphasize sister-city relations or cultural ties.

The art of crafting metal or stone plaques engraved with urban motifs and Arabic inscriptions also has a tradition in Syria, serving as a cultural expression between the two neighboring countries.

در سوریه، به ویژه در شهرهای تاریخی چون دمشق، اِعمال نمادهایی فرهنگی مانند مدال‌ها، لوح‌های یادبود، نمادهای ساختمانی و تأثیرگذار در سطح شهر، برای تجلیل از مناسبت‌های دیپلماتیک یا فرهنگی سابقه دارد.
