مطابق منابع، شهر اصفهان دارای رابطه خواهرخواندگی (sister city) با شهر بارسلونا در اسپانیا است.

یکی از منابع خبر داده است که این قرارداد در ۱۴ ژانویه ۱۹۹۹ (۱۴/۱/۱۹۹۹) منعقد شده است.

اسپانیا یکی از مراکز مهم تولید سرامیک‌های تزئینی در اروپا بوده است، با تأثیرپذیری از فرهنگ اسلامی و مورس‌ها (Moor) در اندلس.

شهرهایی مانند تالاورا دِ لا رِینا، مونتی‌جارد، و ال‌پالادار (و از جمله منطقه کاتالونیا) دارای سنت‌های قوی در تولید کاشی‌های لعاب‌دار، موزاییک‌کاری و ظروف سفالی بودند.

طی دوران اسلامی در اسپانیا، تکنیک‌های لعاب‌کاری و تزئینات سفال تحت تأثیر فرهنگ اسلامی (از قرن هشتم به بعد) رشد کردند، و پس از بازپس‌گیری‌های مسیحی، این هنرها با ترکیب سبک گوتیک، رنسانس و باروک نیز ادامه یافت.

در قرن نوزدهم و بیستم، با صنعتی‌شدن، تولیدات سفالی تزئینی همچنان اهمیت داشت و شهرهایی مثل بارسلونا نیز از لحاظ هنری و فرهنگی توجه به هنرهای کاربردی مانند سرامیک داشتند (به ویژه در زمینه طراحی و معماری داخلی).
